Must.Be.Strong

I gave up cheese and chocolate for Lent  - crazy I know, especially since I'm not even Catholic. As I suspected, going sans chocolate hasn't been that hard, unless face to face with a delicious-looking treat containing the self-enforced forbidden ingredient. Much more tempting and prevalent daily, is cheese.  It's in so many things I like to eat.  While it's easy to get dishes without, it's just not the same knowing how much more enjoyable things taste with the addition of cheese. Oh well, 40 days really isn't very long in the scheme of things and I almost decided to nix dairy completely. I shouldn't complain and I'm pretty sure I'll live. Actually, my body is probably thanking me. *Sigh*

Cupcake Congrats

A shout-out to my dear and talented friend Jamie from Jamie of All Trades (JOAT) whose red velvet and keylime cupcakes were voted the best cupcakes in Seattle by Seattle Met Blogs. Bravo!

Here are the links to her oh-so-yummy, award-winning recipes.

Patriotic Desserts

The 4th of July is only a couple of days away....time for family, friends, fireworks, and of course, food! As usual, Martha Stewart has receipes for some darling and delicious looking red, white and blue treats. These are so much better than those boring semi-decorated sugar cookies you can pick up at any old grocery store bakery.

Sweet corn - no husking required

Oh my goodness! How adorable are these corn on the cob cupcakes I saw on Cupcakes Take the Cake?? The corn niblets are Jelly Bellies (is that the plural of Jelly Belly jelly beans?) and the pat of butter is a Starburst. I always think it's fascinating when people make food look like another. You know, how they've made a whole "sushi" platter on Ace of Cakes? I think it would weird me out to eat something like that, but these are just too cute. The creative cupcakes are featured in the book Hello, Cupcake! The recipe can also be found on the Martha Stewart site.

Douche de bébé

I saw the most darling idea for a baby shower on MarthaStewart.com; French Countryside. Everything is delicate and lovely and sweet - just like a new baby. I love the little details and touches. It's definitely not a traditional, cheesy baby shower - it's much more tasteful and chic.

Decorations:
Embroidered linens, a tiny arrangement of forget-me-nots, and a few dangling wired wreaths

Invitations:
Invites can easily be made by hand, you'd just need some lovely floral French-looking paper and a pretty font and an accent, such as a ribbon. I'm sure there are many pre-made blank invitations or cards that would be well suited for this theme as well.

Games:
Guests write their favorite names for (boys) and (girls) on slips of paper that are dropped in jars for the parents' consideration. There are many other games to choose from, just use the same color palate as the shower and have someone with nice handwriting add details to whatever you choose to do.

Shower Gift Basket:
Give the expectant mother a pretty, fabric-lined basket to collect the gifts.

Potato Leek Soup

Radishes with Chive Butter

Pissaladiere

Madeleines

Chocolat Blanc (aka White Chocolate)

Favors:
Chocolate Blanc: wrap blocks of white chocolate in parchment, tied with waxed twine, and topped with a vanilla bean to make individual servings of Chocolat Blanc.

In addition to the Chocolat Blanc, fragrant French soaps packaged in the color scheme would be a simple, cost-effective, usable token.

** I also think this theme would be great for a bridal shower

V-Day

Now, as much as I dislike Valentine's Day, I do like treats, especially super cute treats. When browsing Hostess with the Mostess, I happened upon some adorable Valentine's yummies. I then searched for some additional recipes the web. They're all so darling that perhaps I will consider making some for the dreadful holiday :)

Season's Eatings

How cute are these festive cupcakes from Sprinkles? Such a cute idea for a Christmas party, hostess gift or just a sweet treat for someone you love (or yourself :) ). The ones shown can be purchased for $38 from Sprinkles, but I think they would be fairly easy to re-create if you didn't want to spend the dough (no pun intended). Well, at least the outsides...I don't think I'd be able to master the yummy Sprinkles batter on my own. However, they do sell six flavors of their cupcake mix. One canister is $14 and makes a dozen cupcakes.
